The 1st Penn State Chinese Cultural Festival

Dear Friends and Chinese culture lovers,

The Penn State Chinese Friendship Association (CFA), on behalf of the whole Chinese community here in Penn State, is going to host the 1st Chinese Cultural Festival on October, 21st and 22nd, in HUB Heritage Hall. This is going to be a two-day event, mainly divided into two parts: (on the 1st day) the hands-on interactive section and (on the 2nd day) the performance section.

For the first day (Tuesday Oct. 21st), between 3:30pm and 7:30pm, we would like to introduce many of the most traditional aspects of the Chinese culture. We will have about eleven booths set up with each one having an individual theme:

1.        Chinese Arts of Paper-cutting

2.        Chinese Kites

3.        Art of Chinese Tea Brewing

4.        Peking Opera Facial Expression Arts (on small models)

5.        Chinese Lantern Crafting

6.        Chinese Embroidery

7.        Traditional Chinese Toys

8.        Chinese Scenic Post/Photo-cards Exhibition

9.        Chinese Calligraphy

10.    Chinese Knot-charms

11.    Dumpling Making/Tasting

A banner with introduction of each theme is placed near each associated booth. The booths will contain exhibits and hands-on DIY materials. We hope that the visitors can have a real experience of the intriguing Chinese culture. Each booth can present its theme in its own style with different emphasis, e.g. exhibits, video, people with props and costumes, etc. We are trying to show the traditional Chinese culture as much and authentic as possible.

At 7:30pm, we will play some reputable Chinese movies on the big screen when in the same time the interactive activities can continue if desired by the visitors.

For the second day (Wednesday Oct. 22nd), between 7:00pm and 9:30pm, we will have performances with traditional Chinese shows, dances, Peking opera, songs, martial arts, etc.

If you have more ideas for this event, please feel free to contact us via email PSUCFAEVENT@gmail.com . We also need a lot of volunteers, so please send us an email if you are interested in the Chinese culture and would like to contribute in this event.

 We Need your Help!!!

The positions where volunteers are needed:

1.      Experts or enthusiasts in any of the themes we mentioned above

2.      Volunteers that would like to help in each booths

3.      Volunteers as ushers

4.      Volunteers for decoration

5.      People who are interested in making HunTun/YunTun and dumplings.

6.      Performances related to traditional Chinese culture

7.      People who are good at photography

8.      One host (MC) for the performance (fluent in English)

If you have anything (clothes, customs, arts, toys, food, photos/pictures, videos, stamps, coins, money, etc.) that can show some aspects of the Chinese Culture, please let us know, because it is critical that you would lend us your precious personal collections in order to exhibit the rich Chinese culture as a whole in this event. It can be huge and expensive, and it can be small and common in China. As long as it is a part of the Chinese culture, we will welcome your most generous offer and help. CFA will certainly keep a record of your personal belongings and bring them back to its lovely owner in its original condition after this event.

For anything about this event, please contact Penn State CFA via email:

(If you are interested in a particular aspect, please indicate that in the email. We will reply you with more details.)
