On May 12th 2008, a devastating earthquake (magnitude 8.0) hit the Sichuan Province of China. The tremor was felt in most areas in China, including Beijing (900 miles away) and Shanghai (1050 miles away), as well as several foreign countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Russia.
The quake and thousands of subsequent aftershocks have caused heavy casualty. As of May 28th 2008, the confirmed death toll reaches 68,109 (including local residents and relief workers). 19,851 are still missing. More than 364,500 were injured. About 4.8 million people became homeless and over 4,000 children became orphans. Recently, about 160,000 have been evacuated due to the danger of quake lakes created by landslides.
